'Minecraft' Library Helps You Dodge News Media Censorship

There are a variety of ways to keep media from being censored however it is becoming increasingly difficult as nations like Russia and China take action against VPNs. Reporters Without Borders thinks it has the solution to these increasing challenges: make news available through a game that's rarely blocked. The team has worked with BlockWorks and MediaMonks on the Uncensored Library, a Minecraft map that features news articles from journalists and websites that are often censored for its unflattering truths. You'll find stories from murdered Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi (whose fiancee Hatice Cengiz has endorsed the project) and the activist-friendly Russian site Grani.ru and the Egyptian anti-corruption outlet Mada Masr, among others.

The library is a technical accomplishment in its own right. It's like a massive neo-classical museum, with specific country wings and huge book collections. You can't tear the library apart, but you can expand it should you have the space and inclination.

Reporters Without Borders believes that the Uncensored Library should have a high degree of resilience. Anyone can download the required map, and Minecraft's nature allows it to host another server if an oppressive government attempts to shut one down. We don't expect this to be lasting for a long time, however. Countries with already severe censorship policies don't have to think twice about banning Minecraft outright This could be just a temporary reprieve.

But that's not the point. This is also a commentary on censorship and an opportunity for people to be involved in difficult subjects. If it encourages some Minecraft players to speak out for freedom of the press or pursue investigative reporting as a profession the game will have fulfilled its goal.
